Assembly Term 3

On the 15th of August 2014 Room 7 had their assembly, our main focus was to inspire our audience with our mihi and to talk about global warming effects on Antarctica’s animals but especially our fluffy friends the Emperor Penguin.

We performed a dance about staying alive and we were trying to reach out to the audience and tried to get them involved in as many ways as possible, our class also spent lots of time crafting origami beaks to use for the dance to make it more amusing. We also gave many example of how global warming is destroying habitats and killing animals.

At the beginning of our assembly we performed a Māori song that was about Māori language vowels because our old student teacher Mrs Villiamu had a thing about music and how it can affect our daily lives, so we were inspired to use her style of music and perform a song that her, and our awesome teacher Mrs Stennard taught us.

At the end of our fabulous assembly the netball certificates were handed out and our school was very proud to have one first place team, two second place teams and a fourth place team.

Ki O Rahi Tournament

To end Matariki we had our Ki O Rahi tournament.  Four Teams faced off in a round robin tournament with the two finalists being the teams with the most accrued points.

Team Red; Talia, Ashleigh, Nikita, Patrick, Te Aute and Vaea played Team Blue; Hugo, Mrdina, Ethan, Jess, Fergus, Jeremiah and Alison in a hard fought and exctiting final.

At the end of full time the scores were tied at 2 all.

We played an extra minute each way to come up with a winner, in the last 30 seconds Team Blue scored the deciding point. Team Red were gracious in defeat and played a great game.

Science Roadshow

Science Roadshow 2014
On Friday the 27th of June year five and six got to go to the science road show at Royal Oak Intermediate. When we got there we watched a show called “Are we living?” We really enjoyed the show. After the show we could walk around and look at the different science experiments on display. At some of the displays, if you understood how it worked you could get a little card and go up to one of the teachers and explain how it worked to them and if they thought you understood they would clip your card and you could enter the draw.  Looking at the displays was really fun and most people liked the display where you chucked a little ping pong ball into a large funnel and then you pushed a huge lever down and the force [the air] pushed the ball out of the funnel.  After looking around we watched another show about our body.  We had a lot of fun.

The round robin tournament playing ki O rahi was postponed until the beginning of next term due to bad weather.  Stay tuned to find out the winning team.

Big Foot Cycling

Bigfoot Cycling

By Amelia Kelly

On the 12th and 13th of June, we were really lucky to have Bigfoot Adventures come to our school and do a cycling program with us. It was a really good opportunity for people to refresh their skills, and even learn from scratch. It was really fun, and taught us all some really important skills that we didn’t know. We were taught how dangerous it can be why’ll you’re riding on the road, how fragile your brain is and how important it is to always wear a helmet properly. Everyone learnt something new, and was left smiling.

Pink Group Papyrus

In Pink group, we have been reading a book called Sandstorm. We did a presentation about hieroglyphics and papyrus paper. We drew hieroglyphics and Egyptian symbols.  We made the papyrus by boiling tea and dipping it in it when the tea cooled down. We left it overnight and drew our pictures, and then some of us painted it and some shaded it.

Room 7's Persuasive Writing

In Room 7 we have been learning how to write a persuasive piece of text. the topics we have chosen are what we want the most. This photo is an example of our text being published by Ashleigh L.
Our success criteria is to use a lot of emotive language, have a better technical vocabulary, and use facts and evidence to back our writing.

Writing - Persuasive.

In writing we have been learning to write persuasive texts - read what Fergus wrote.

I need more basketball equipment because I can practise my skills, I will spend more time outside, it will also give me a more fun attitude to practising and upgrading my skills to a better level of playing.

If I am bought lots of new basketball equipment it will help me practise and I can then have lots of fun by practising instead of being forced to practise when I don’t even want to practise. When I practise more I will improve my game and Michael Jordan once said, “some people wish it would happen, some people pray it would happen but others like me make it happen.”

I know getting me more basketball gear will help me get better but it will also make practising one million times more fun than it would be if I just had a ball and passing against the wall. If I did had more equipment to train with it would make me more eager to get outside and play with my basketball things.

You should get me more basketball equipment because it will keep me of electronics therefore my eyesight will be much more clear and it will give me more of a chance in eye tests and work in school, lastly you won’t need to use your voice to scream “ Fergus get of the computer.”

These are a lot of reasons why you should get me more basketball gear, it will help me get better, I can practise a lot more, it will make practise time more fun and you won’t need to tell me to get of the computer with saves your voice for more important conversations. You will never need to ask me to go outside because I will already be practising. I will give you time to think about it.
